“It happened on Wednesday afternoon at around 3:00 p.m. local time. The two men took off their clothes near the Rialto Bridge, leaving their clothes there. They jumped into the water and swam across the Grand Canal,” a police spokesman told CNN.
The city’s main waterway, the Grand Canal, is 16 feet deep and linked to many small canals. Lined on the sides of churches, palaces and hotels, it is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions.

The police told CNN that the men were stripped naked and jumped on the channel.

Police spokesman She told CNN that members of the city’s Lagunari regiment – a branch of the military police stationed in Venice for patrolling and maintaining order – began photographing the two men when they saw them swimming. Then they showed the footage to the local police, who fined the tourists.
The police added that “the two men were fined 350 euros each and were temporarily deported from the city.”
The fine imposed on the husband is the standard fine for swimming in popular Venetian channels and was not associated with coronavirus restrictions.
The men were temporarily removed from Venice under the “DASPO Urbano” regulation, which allows the authorities to transfer a person from the city to maintain public order.
After more than two months of strict closures aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus, Italy is beginning to welcome visitors again.
As of Wednesday, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, people arriving from elsewhere in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or the countries covered by the Schengen Agreement can travel to Italy freely without having to enter a quarantine.
